Let's discuss these rules and their significance while working with oil paints of different consistencies and types.

Three oil painting rules you must learn

You have to keep three basic thumb rules in your mind before dipping your brushes and imagination in the oil paints. These rules are:

Rule 1: Fat over Lean

Description: While working with oil paints, you will often have to choose between oils and solvents as mediums to make the paints workable. In technical terms, the paints mixed with oil are referred to as Fat paints whereas the paints mixed with solvents are called Lean. This rule states that the initial layers of your painting must have lean paints whereas the overlapping layers are of fat paints for better appearance and workability.

Significance: This rule helps you maintain an efficient and accurate fluidity of your paints through additives.

Rule 2: Thick over Thin

Description: You can create several layers of paint to determine how your painting looks. However, the number of thin layers and thick layers must balance each other out for a smoother and dense appearance. As this rule indicates, the primary layers of your painting must be made of thin layers on which you can easily rest your thick layers.

Significance: To make sure that the initial layers are dried up quickly they are kept thin and clear due to high fluidity.

Rule 3: Slow drying over Fast drying.

Description: The properties of colors vary from brand to brand and also depend on additives. According to this rule, while dealing with different colors you have to make sure that the colors that dry sooner or quicker than others are placed initially (at initial layers) and then topped up by the ones that take time to dry up.

Significance: The oil paintings may need a lot of time to get dried up.

Winding up

To make sure your oil painting is made without submerging the current layer into the previous ones, applying these rules is quite important.

These rules will also help you create an order and make a painting worth the oil painting price in India paid by art enthusiasts. Keep in mind the factors you will look for while buying an Oil painting in India.
